1988 RS Turbo, just about everything replaced!!!

Postby adam.d » Tue Feb 10, 2009 1:32 pm

1988 Rs Turbo, had new wings, doors, sills, recon xr3i gearbox, replacement bottom end, new head, low mileage turbo just fitted, new battery, superchipped ecu, chrome rocker cover, charge pipe and heat shield, new brake lines and brand new callipers 2 1/2" stainless exhaust, very solid car. Alarm + immob with remote locking. Had a respray around 12 months ago but the lad never removed the windows so has over spray on the rubbers, easily come off tho with some thinners and a bit of time. Was rolling roaded at 197bhp before all the engine work so could do with being set up again.
11 months test 5 months Tax £3000

This car has now developed a knock, I have ran out of time and money to throw at it. It still starts 1st time and drives. I am open to sensible offers if anyone's interested.

sounds like a bottom end knock, a replacement bottom end will cost around £100, A S/H engine would cost anywhere from £200 but I wouldn't say its as serious as that. I've just ran out of money and time with it and will be very sad to see it go.

I understand that. But surely it will sell easier and for more money if sorted. What about askin Jano.

It's getting a replacement bottom end as we speak, then it will be sold as a working car. I'll be putting it up for sale again soon a bit cheaper as I now need it gone

Well it was supposed to be getting a replacement fitted but the lad in the garage cancelled  Now for sale on ebay with the spare bottom end so easy fix for someone.

Adam, i can spot a couple of things that would help the engine out.

Firstly there is a one way valve missing off the pipe between the bottom of the breather and inlet which you have a take off for a boost gauge.
Then the top breather pipe hanging down will cause the engine to smoke on boost and idle as the oil has no option but to run down the pipe into the metering unit. Also at the angle fo the engine bay pic it looks like the dizzy has too much advance? Has it been checked.

Thanks for looking Jano. The engine pic was taken a while ago and the breather system has since been removed and now vents to atmosphere. I've put some up to date engine pics on now. Thanks for taking the time to have a look and trying to help me 8)

Do you still think the dizzy is in the wrong position? (will have been removed when the heads were swapped over).

im using a dongle thingy in the back of the laptop at the mo and the pics takes ages to load so cant see them till tomorrow.

Anytime the dizzy is moved on the timing needs to be checked with a timing light. The max you should have it set to is around 14degree advance. However i have seen many cars come to me with well over 20 and ready to spit a piston out the bonnet. I only charge about £40 -50 to sort it out, would sell it easier if its running well when you put your foot down and it idles nice. If thats what your doing with it if your not selling it let me know and ill move the post for you or etc.
