I bin lookin through a few Emails and found one that was sent from Fast Ford.

Jano, have a go at this lot for glaring errors and general technical
confusion, good luck.

best regards and great to see you the other day

Ford Escort Turbo ? James Ruppert

This is not a Ford Escort GTi. I repeat, this is not a Ford Escort Gti,
without a rear spoiler. Yeah, sure it looks a little bit like a cooking
Diamond White Mark 6 Ocort, but pop the bonnet and there will be a surprise
or two. Under there are a few clues that point to this Escort being just a
little bit out of the ordinary. Some might even describe it as odd. After
all, who would think about putting a Fiesta Turbo lump where an Escort one
could, or should be. It?s not supposed to fit which is odd, so it must be
another OddKidd creation then.

Jano is the OddKidd, even though he doesn?t look at all odd or behave oddly.
Indeed he speaks more sense about tuning Fords than just about anyone I?ve
ever met. Technically he?s quite a few levels above my swamp thing grasp of
anything mechanical. Yes if anything I?m the odd one odd out here. Jano got
into this modification business for the same reason that the rest of us have
to muck around with cars. "The costs were just too high. First I wanted to
change the way a car looked, then it had to go faster and ultimately I
needed to turbo charge it. That was expensive, so I set about doing it all
myself." Being a perfectionist Jano went back to college to learn all the
science and physics of it all. That is funny really because his Ooddkidd?
nickname came via a science teacher at the end of his tether who was
chucking this troublemaker out of the classroom. It is a good job that Jano
paid attention at college, because it is really paying off now, but any
reason for choosing Fords?

"I?ve always loved the shapes of Fords, getting parts for them is
straightforward and they are dead easy to work on a bit like Lego really."
Laughs Jano. Oh yes and we are also in Ford?s heartland, in deepest Romford.
You can hardly move around here without bumping into your favourite blue
oval.
What Jano does is specialise in anything fast and Ford like which he then
goes about making even faster. Well actually that?s a lie because some of
the Fords his gets aren?t at all fast on account of them not having any
wheels, or much else really. Thumbing through his photo album are some of
the bare shells he?s acquired over the years and then completely reworked.
It is hard not to be impressed with the miracle work although this Escort
wasn?t too bad when he got it.

"A mate of mine bought a Mark 6 shell as a project with the idea of putting
45 carbs in. He repainted it and did a great job, but it just wasn?t fast
enough for him, which is when I stepped in. The first thing I did was to
strip out all of his modifications which I then sold back to him." Now Jano
could get on with the important business of finding an Fiesta Turbo engine,
but why on earth would he want to put a Fiesta engine into an Escort?" There
would just be far too much gubbins under the bonnet if I had gone for an
Escort engine. You see it predated mechanical injection and the bottom line
is that there is a limit to the amount of fuel that you can get to the
engine. Sure you can go for a big turbo and big bores, but there is still a
fuelling issue, which will overwhelm a pressure-regulated sensor. One
Injector trying to supply four ports just won?t work." Clearly you canna
change the laws of physics Captain. So if I understand Jano correctly he was
gong to be much better off with a Fiesta unit?

"Yep, we got a 1600cc salvage unit, which runs an industry standard EFi
chip." Jano?s eyes light up now because this is his specialist subject and
when the penny in my thick head starts to rattle around and then drop. The
secret is all in the EFi. "It is 100% mappable anywhere in the country. For
instance if your Fiesta Turbo has been converted to run on our Weber Marelli
system and it has a bigger valves and a modified head then it can be mapped
specifically to that. What would normally cost you ?3000 can be had for half
the price with this set up." Strictly it isn?t all Fiesta because the top
end is actually Escort Turbo.

That isn?t the only thing that Jano modifies. The throttle body has to be
improved to keep up with the demands that the revised system puts on it.
"Off boost it is going to drive like a fairly normal car, but whereas a
mechanical set-up has to suck, press and push before much happens the
response from a fully electronic system is instant. What I want to see is a
nice smooth line on a graph as the revs mount from zero to 7000rpm that is
my aim every time."

What all means is that a 7psi the car is producing a useful 178bhp, but at
maximum 16-17psi you are looking at a very respectable 230bhp which is great
for what is such a light car. So 60 mph arrives in around 5.6 seconds and
100 mph in just 12.4 seconds, whilst the standing quarter comes up in 13.6
seconds with 108 mph on the clock.

Apparently the really, really hard part is to get all this management system
to run without resorting to a cut and shut distributor. Bodging a
distributor is never going to be a good long-term solution. Getting the
Cosworth throttle body right is a challenge. Indeed fitting the engine and
gearbox into a body where it was never intended to live means laser cutting
brackets and making brand new mounts. You can?t see it all by just peering
into the engine bay but there is clearly a nicely fabricated cam phasing
components. Not only that, lots of other vehicles have donated their vital
organs like a fan from a Merc 190E and the ignition coil off a Rover V6.
Fuelling is pretty crucial and Jano realised that the fuel lines needed to
be able to withstand a high pressure. That meant a custom petrol tank with
its very own swirl pots, Group N fuel separator all aided by a Cosworth
pump. Indeed just take a look at the breathtaking techspec panel if you want
some idea of just how much engineering integrity has gone into this engine.

Of course the wrong transmission could ruin all of Jano?s hard work, but he
rates the MTX 75 gearbox very highly. "It will take up to 360bhp without any
bother and has superb gear ratios and it manages to hold the large wheels
really well. I linked it up to an AP clutch and used synthetic oil
throughout. As for the suspension well "the rear anti roll bars take up any
slack, but the rear beam is the most important part of all" that explains
the WRC item that lives there then. "The front end though is not too bad at
all," so that?s been left alone. Braking is an issue so Cosworth front and
RS2000 rear set-up make sense. So what we have here is a highly driveable
car that when required responds instantly. It must have taken years to
build, but no, it took just two weeks and two days. Jano is a professional
and knew exactly what he was doing and exactly what he wanted to achieve
which is important when you are reworking a car as comprehensively as this
one.

Remember I said that his wasn?t an Escort Gti? Well I was right on that
count, but you may need more convincing that this is actually a van. Well
it?s the fastest cleanest one I?ve ever seen, but for picking up parts it
certainly did the job and when it wasn?t doing that it was Jano?s
girlfriend?s set of wheels. Obviously with the TAZ tag on the numberplate
there is only one nickname that this motor could ever had, because it is now
time to say goodbye to this devil of a car. Right now Jano has a new
workhorse in the shape of one of the very few Escort pick-ups in captivity.
When that? ready, any day now, then this very special and not odd at all
creation will be surplus to requirements. That means offers in the region of
?6000 will get you Ocort that absolutely definitely isn?t a GTi. The thing
is though the bloke in the tatty RS Turbo isn?t going to know that until
he?s eating your dust.

FEATURE PANEL

Looming Brilliant/Fruit of the Loom

You may have heard of Weber Marelli which kept Cosworth engine management in
check all those years ago and that is why Jano still refers to the system as
a Cossie for those who haven?t heard the name and think that anything made
by some Italian company must be a bit dodgy. Actually the Weber Marelli set
up has already graced some of the finest wheeled machinery known to
humankind from a Ducati 999 to a Ferrari F40, so we are in good company
here. "The problem you can have with a fifteen year old engine is the
fifteen year old loom. We get around that be sourcing a loom from say an
Alfa Romeo and then modifying it. First of all it will be in better
condition and just a few years old. Secondly the quality will be far
superior. There is a limit to the amount that Ford will pay for components,
but on a modern Alfa the connections, pins and cables are all going to be
tip top and I personally test everything myself to make sure. A loom off an
old Cosworth in a scrappie is going to be fairly marginal."
